Calvert County History
The earliest people to live in the Calvert County area were the Piscataway Indians. The tribes established villages along the river, where they grew corn and tobacco. The rich soil made this area extremely attractive to colonists arriving from Europe in the 1600s.
Calvert County was originally settled as Charles County in 1654, and is one of the oldest counties in the United States. In 1658 the county was renamed Calvert County, because it was established by Cecelius Calvert. In 1695, Calvert County was partitioned into St. Mary’s, Charles and Prince George’s, and its boundaries became substantially what they are today.
In 1780 during the Revolutionary War, British troops invaded Calvert County. Another invasion occurred during the War of 1812. Calvert County was a battleground on both land and sea.
When slavery ended, many changes took place in Calvert County. The economy slowly stopped depending on large plantations and cheap labor. In 1867, Captain Isaac Solomon established a fishery in the southernmost part of the county. It became known as Solomon’s Island. Along with a cannery and a fishing fleet, the Solomon’s Island created a bustling economy for the county.
In 1936 Calvert County only had about 15 miles of paved roads. In 1939, the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative began service in the area and brought residents electricity. Calvert and Charles Counties were connected in 1951 by a toll bridge across the Patuxent River.
